However, because most eye-tracking systems were designed for use in human adults, the accuracy of eye-tracking data collected in other populations is unclear, as are potential approaches to minimize measurement error. Remote eye tracking with automated corneal reflection provides insights into the emergence and development of cognitive, social, and emotional functions in human infants and non-human primates.

We highlight current trends in supportive technologies for vision screening, and identify the involved stakeholders and the research studies that discuss how to develop more supportive ET technologies for vision screening and training by non-experts. The data orginate from a literature survey of peer-reviewed journals and conference articles complemented by secondary sources, following a rapid review methodology. The focus is on exploring the possibilities of ET technologies to better support screening and handling of vision disorders, especially by non-vision experts. We review interdisciplinary research on performing vision investigations, and discuss current challenges for technology support. While there are indications that these technologies can support vision screening, a broad understanding of how to apply them and by whom, and if it is possible to utilize them at schools, is lacking. The aim of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the importance of vision screening for school-aged children, and to investigate the possibilities of how eye-tracking (ET) technologies can support this. Many children have undetected vision problems or insufficient visual information processing that may be a factor in lower academic outcomes.
The study emphasizes the promising direction of gaze-included education for future studies. The study shows that even a low number of participants can already exhibit a significant increase in expertise over the course of two trials. The AOI images also revealed superior gaze strategies when participants followed the tutorial, where they focused more on relevant areas. They mostly fixated on Photoshop tools and demanding areas, like hair sections of the task images. Fixation-based image patches showed which AOIs participants considered most important. All participants exhibited more effective gaze strategies during the second task, requiring less fixations and showcasing more efficient saccade behavior. Five participants did not refer to the tutorial and time-on-task decreased in the second task.
Participants spent more time toggling between Photoshop and the tutorial during the first task. Besides logging window switches between Photoshop and the video, screen recording was used to analyze gaze behavior.

Gaze data was collected with the Tobii Pro Spectrum eye tracker running at 300 Hz and software based on the open source toolbox Titta. After watching a short video tutorial, participants were asked to complete two masking tasks.They were allowed to switch back to the video in case of confusion. Overall data from seven participants (six novices and one expert) has been collected. The goal of the study is to analyze how gaze strategies of novices differ from those of experts with regard to the tutorial video as competency evolves. The study aims to analyze the gaze strategies of novice and expert Photoshop users while they are following a tutorial video on a masking task. Current studies have demonstrated that eye tracking can be used as an objective tool to measure participants as their competency evolves, with potential application in graphic design softwares, like Adobe’s Photoshop.
